[Discussion] Potential ACRNM x Death Stranding (video game)-UNR

Death Stranding is a mysterious video game currently being created by the legendary developer Hideo Kojima. Little is known about the project, but due to intriguing and esoteric trailers, big name involvement (Norman Reedus, Madds Mikkelson, Guillermo del Toro) and Kojima’s track record of fantastic games, there is a lot of speculation and hype surrounding it.

Errolson Hugh, head of ACRONYM has met up with Kojima and DS lead character designer Yoji Shinkawa at least twice.

ACRNM’s utilitarian futuristic apparel shares many similarities with the attire of Death Stranding:

There is a possibility that Errolson Hugh is providing input for the aesthetics of the clothing. The fact that Shinkawa, the lead character designer appears in both of Hugh’s photos implies that there is some level of collaboration going on. If this is the case, it is very exciting!

ACRNM also has past experience with video games: they designed the jacket for the protagonist of Deus Ex. Based on these things, I think the likelihood of their involvement in the game is high.

The clothing in DS look very detailed and realistic, and every strap, device and buckle seems to have a purpose. Seeking input and advice from someone who creates such utilitarian clothing for a living seems like a no-brainer. Plus, Kojima has been seen wearing Acronym apparel (particularly the shoes) on many occasions, and seems to be a fan of the brand.

The future implications of such a collaboration are exciting. This game could catalyze bigger collaborations between clothing companies and video game companies. Not in the sense of product placement, but artistically, in order to explore and further certain aesthetics and ideas. For example, styles like techwear are most practical and fitting in futuristic cyberpunk dystopias, and video games are a great way to create such an environment. A game with an emphasis on contemporary fashion styles could be fantastic. Games have the capability of allowing us to interact with clothing concepts both practical and impractical in ways that could greatly advance the art form. The possibilities seem endless. At the very least it’s fun to think about.
