What to read and watch while you are waiting for the game-UNR

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I prepared a list of a decent amount of films and books that Kojima shared and which could in any degree contribute a part of themselves to the overall concept of the game. This post was inspired by the question from u/GorilaManco.

To read:

  • The Time Wanderers by The Strugatsky brothers

The fantastic story of the Strugatsky brothers, which concludes the cycle “The World of Noon” and the trilogy about Maxim Kammerer (including the stories “Prisoners of Power (Inhabited Island)”, “The Beetle in the Anthill”). An interesting story that mentions homo ludens.

  • The Man Who Turned into a Stick by Kobo Abe

The play of the Japanese playwright that influenced the early work of Kojima. He also mentioned it when explaining some of the details of Death Stranding.

  • Riverworld by Philip José Farmer

It is really hard to explain this book, but the world of Riverworld is kinda similar to the world of BT in Death Stranding.

To watch:

  • Interstellar

The move from another genius that you most likely have already seen. Interstellar, as in Death Stranding, contains some topics of physics and the space-time continuum. In my opinion, ideologically they are quite similar. At least for now.

  • Annihilation

As a result of the cataclysm on the planet, “Flicker” appears - an anomalous zone, constantly growing and filled with horrible monsters. By the way, if you translate the trailer shown at E3 2018 from Japanese, “annihilation” is a phenomenon that occurs after Sam’s death in Death Stranding. The film is in the top ten of the latest pictures that Hideo really liked.

  • Stalker

The undeniable classic of many subspecies of fiction and post-apocalypse. Kojima knows and loves this movie, therefore, he drew inspiration from it, as well as from other original works of the Strugatsky brothers, with the greatest spoon in his ideological cuisine.

  • The Discovery

The scientist Thomas Harper made the discovery - he scientifically proved that life does not end with death, that after death there is something else. Millions of people on Earth began to commit suicide, believing that in this way they could get to a better place.

  • Children of Men

The world was barren, the main character comes to the defense of "the last hope of mankind" - a pregnant woman who must be delivered to a safe place. In Death Stranding, Sam is faced with the task of restoring the remnants of the past world.

  • Na Srebrnym Globie

Polish film, permeated with the atmosphere of the first and third trailer of the game. At this the parallels end, however, I advise you to see it, if you have time and desire to expand your horizons.

  • Kanał

Another Polish film, this time permeated with the atmosphere of the second trailer. And on this the parallels also end. By the way, one of Kojima's favorite films.

  • Coco

The cartoon is one of the last ten pictures that Hideo really liked. In all seriousness I consider it as a very close spirit to Death Stranding. The hero goes to the land of the dead, where he meets the souls of his ancestors, who will help him to meet the spirit of his idol. Required to view.

Worthy of mention: Arrival, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Westworld, The Martian, Stranger Things, The Shape of Water (Guillermo del Toro), The Leftovers (Margaret Qualley), The Walking Dead (Norman Reedus), Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen), Juste la fin du monde (Léa Seydoux), Bionic Woman (Lindsay Wagner).
