An amazing piece of recontextualization (The Beach at the end of the game)-UNR

Early on in the game, we get the infamous cutscene from the first trailer, which spawned the Norman Reedus and the Funky Fetus meme. Memetic as it may be, the visuals were rather striking. After cradling the baby for a while, Norman stands up, and goes to the shore against the crashing waves and dead whales. Over yonder in the distance, five figures are floating in the air. Very ominous indeed.

As you go through the game, you see the very large, titan-like BT's, and the assumption is that those figures in the distance are these five, each representing the five big Extinction Events that happened in the world so far.

And then you get to the end of the game. You are stranded in a beach. No whales this time, but the five figures also eventually show up ominously in the distance again. Amelie points to them and tells you that you are "still connected". You hear voices as you get nearer to the shore. The people desperately looking for you from the other side.

It was then that I realized that those five weren't BT's. They represent some of the most important connections you have made in the entire game: Deadman, Die-Hardman, Heartman, Mama/Lockne, and Fragile. My jaw dropped at this realization. God I really love how for as convoluted and high-concept the story was sometimes, it was wrapped up really neatly.
