Konami is better off without Kojima-UNR

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I'm going to preface this by saying that I don't like the Metal Gear Solid games and I don't like Kojima as a game creator, though I do respect the man. With that said, I am going to try and argue this point without letting such bias cloud it.

Metal Gear Solid V was a massive success, but even with it's success it barely covered the costs that it took to create that game. It's well known that Kojima likes to do whatever he wants with absolute disregard for the business side of things. That's fine, he's not a business man, but him constantly trying to fight Konami when they are trying to reign him in doesn't help matters.

Konami was actively hemorrhaging money during the development of MGSV, the amount of money and resources it took to create the fox engine alone was already hurting the company, not to mention the fact that MGSV's development kept getting extended because Kojima kept adding shit, leading the game to end up extremely behind schedule. For many years Konami poured money into Kojima's magnum opus only to get absolutely nothing in return. They were well within their rights to rush the game's development, and the fact that even after all that the game still felt unfinished, shows that Kojima was a money pit director who was EXTREMELY bad for business.

The Fox Engine is a brilliant piece of technology, and Konami wanting to use it for their other properties makes sense, but Kojima wanted to use it as an educational tool for college's and the like, as if he was the one who poured money into it. His ego and artistic arrogance hurt the company that made him, his refusal to compromise with the higher ups is his fault, not Konami's.

I don't blame Konami for monetizing the fuck out of Metal Gear Survive, MGSV's success was still not enough to justify it's costs and protracted development time, they need to make money from the property, and at least they didn't add DLC to the original MGSV, instead they made their own game AND had it take place in an alternate timeline out of respect for Kojima who has shown them none in return.

Since Kojima's exit, Konami has actually been doing well. Their slot machines and pachinko machines have made them a lot of money, saving them from the ditch Kojima left them in. Their recent explorations with the fox engine have been runaway successes. Their latest Pro Evolution Soccer game is awesome and outright superior to EA's FIFA, and many Soccer teams agree considering many have ditched EA in favor of Konami because of it. They recently released a fun little twin-stick shooter in the Contra universe which is a lot of dumb fun to play. They recently CnD'd a young modder who made a remake of Kojima's PT for PC, but then hired the dude as an intern. Not many publishers go that far, ever.

Meanwhile what has Kojima done? A video game remake of The Postman starring Norman Reedus? He was bad for business, plain and simple and Konami were 100% in the right for ditching him. The whole company has been better off without him.
