People who relocate from country to country often, how does it all work?-UNR

I happened to be watching a clip with Norman Reedus and he mentioned how he bounced around a lot - born in Florida, dropped out of highschool, moved to Japan, then ended up in Spain, etc.

As someone in his mid-late twenties who has never had the opportunity to travel anywhere, I'd like to make up for lost time some day... But I have no idea how people travel like this.

Where do you get the money? How do you just move half way around the world? Where do you stay? Where do you work? Do you have any possessions during this time? How do travel/work visas function? What happens when you're done travelling?

I'd love to spend a brief while in one country before moving on to another, and repeating that several times before settling down somewhere (likely at home, here in Canada) at some point, it just seems like such an unobtainable lifestyle that I don't know the first thing about.
