I'm enjoying Daryl Dixon very much, a fresh take on the rather overdone zombie genre. The original plan was for Melissa McBride to star in the show, but she said she wanted a break.
I don't think her inclusion would have improved the show. There is a good rapport between Daryl and Isabelle, a slight sexual tension but she's a capable survivor with an unexpected past.
And frankly, I think Carol was misused towards the end. There was a potential for a relationship between the two, but the show split them apart and lost their chemistry. She is a killer, often underestimated until he puts the knife in your temple, but later she was a bitter fighter.
I feel like Negan has taken the role of the wildcard, so I'm not sure what Carol would do in France. While Daryl is supposed to be a fish out of water, Norman Reedus fits perfectly as he travels through France. When they walked past Jim Morrison's grave, Daryl may not be a music fan but it's clear that Reedus is.
We'll see what happens when Carol finally arrives. I almost feel bad for the villains. But as a lead character, maybe not.
