Which is OK! Ladies and Gentleman -- That is absolutely OK.
But, people are desperately craving Bloodborne 2 or another Dark Souls.
So that brings me to an obvious question that many of us have, after spending time with Elden Ring: Why does this game exist when there is DS and BB?
To be fair, I was not a fan of the open world concept from the very beginning. For obvious reasons:
- "Open World" is a huge title nowadays. We are used to massive worlds such as RDR2 or Horizon, BoTW, The Witcher 3, or GTA etc. Is it really a surprise that we will be underwhelmed when our expectations aren't met? Miyazaki was fully aware of this and still went with it. Why? Probably because as a designer and director he just craved to be part of open world games. I don't see any other reason but I'm open to interpretation. In my opinion, no 'Souls' or 'Soulslike' would ever need a open world. Remember these games draw their worth from advancing and earning progress. An important core aspect, that Elden Ring completely misses due to it's non-linear design.
- Miyazaki isn't the only one in that department. I think Hideo Kojima should stop focusing on open world, because MGS5 and Death Stranding definitely had some horrible open world's. Still great games, but if the world is boring, the game suffers from it.
As always, from someone who thinks Bloodborne is the greatest game of all time followed by Dark Souls: At the end of the day we don't want new stuff. Let's be honest, nobody needs anything new. Or innovative. When the core recipe worked like a charm.
To me, Elden Ring is just that. I do have fun with it. But again, just like with Sekiro, it could have been more. It feels like it stops itself from being more.
Also, nobody cares for George R.R. Martin. Just like nobody cares for Norman Reedus in Death Stranding. We don't care for famous names in games.
What we do care about, are good games.
Which Elden Ring clearly is! But now get it on with Bloodborne or Dark Souls will ya.
