As E3 approaches, I've been trying to visualize what this game will play like based on the trailers (mostly the third trailer, of course). Here are some ideas:
-
There will be no HUD. Most of the information you need will come either via the life monitor on your wrist or the clicky light on your back. All other info will come through some kind of dialogue, similar to the radio in MGS.
-
The click light will basically act like the stealth reticle in MGSV. Just like in the trailer, it will click when enemies are nearby, and begin spinning wildly when they are dangerously close. When you pull the left trigger (or whatever you have to do in order to bring up your gun, or umbilical cord of death, or whatever), the light will go into its four-pronged combat mode and project an aiming reticle.
-
You will have to stop breathing to remain undetected, but you will only be able to do so for limited amounts of time (because everyone, even Norman Reedus, has to breathe at some point). When you do this, Sam will put a hand over his mouth, just like in the trailer, to give you visual confirmation of the breath holding (remember: no HUD). This would explain why everyone covers their mouth when they stop breathing in the trailer. You don't have to cover your face, but it's a clear indicator that's what's going on.
-
This "breath hold" mechanic will play a big part in the stealth, since you will only be able to remain hidden for limited amounts of time. Knowing Kojima, there will probably be an Easter egg where you can do breath hold exercises to improve your stealth ability, just like doing pull-ups would increase your grip strength in older MGS games.
-
When you die, you will go to the watery upside-down purgatory, and you will have to swim around until you find and grab the dream-catcher, which shows up both in the water and on Sam's uniform in the third trailer.
-
Your babies (plural) will be one-ups or extra lives. Even though Sam only has one baby in the trailer, in the game there will be several. The amount of extra lives you have will be indicated by the number of incubators you have on your back, carried in that conspicuously empty rack on Sam's back in the trailer. Ok, I don't actually think this will be the case (carrying extra babies on your back seems a bit too H.R. Giger for me) but it would be cool at any rate.
-
You will have the ability to remotely control people and vehicles through your tentacles of power when Mads becomes a playable character. Yes, I 100% believe that Mads will become a playable character at some point, with Sam either controlling him or something else happening. Don't be surprised if Mads ends up playing the Raiden to Norman's Snake. In fact, don't be surprised by anything Kojima does, ever.
-
Trailer 3 is how the game will actually begin. I think we'll see the alert that scrambles the Corpse Disposal Team, and then some banter in the jeep which will explain at the very least each person's job. Sam will glance at the device he uses to make corpses disappear. We'll take control of him just after the vehicle crashes (no doubt a result of an attack from the invisible monsters) and everyone is thrown from the truck.
-
And finally: Sam's job is "Porter" because his job is to transport the dead to the afterlife before the floating monsters trap them, so this is what we will be doing as the game starts. The CDT dudes have guns because they are Sam's security; Sam doesn't have one because he is a kind of trans-dimensional medic who isn't allowed to carry a weapon (this will change as the game goes on, I'm sure). He wears a uniform clearly marked "porter" for the same reason combat medics used to wear big red crosses on their shoulders; he is a non-combatant and his uniform indicates this.
That's all my ideas, at least for now. What do you guys think?
