David Bowie's black star lyrics and DS-UNR

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

So I istened to some David Bowie a bit ago but then I heard something in ''Blackstar'' which has some lyrics in it that kind of reminded me of Deathstranding in some way or form. Obviously appart from Hideo Kojima loving Bowie, I do think I want to seperate the way Bowie interpeted his lyrics (or what the general public has to say about the lyrics) and the way Kojima is interpeting it in his game.

First and formost: Blackstar has loads of death imagery and seeing that Deathstranding will be a mechanic within the game, I think that certain things do make sense to me. You can agree to disagree with me on this, but again: this is what I think, which is highly speculative.

The first lyric that struck me was: ''I can’t answer why But I can tell you how We were born upside-down Born the wrong way ‘round''

We are not getting any answers of why or what the baby is for. We only see a hand full of uses the baby can have for the character we are playing as. Kojima won't answer why, but he visualy tells us how.

In the 3rd trailer when Norman Reedus' character (which we can assume is named Sam) is on the ocean floor, you can see the baby in his stomach. The baby is not in a fetal position which doesn't have to mean that it's a Bowie reference, because the baby is giving a thumbs up. But I found it very interesting the the baby is in a breech position. And born from a male. Hence the baby being born the wrong way around.

The last one is a little bit more clear: ''Something happened on the day he died Spirit rose a metre then stepped aside Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried (I’m a blackstar, I’m a star's star, I’m a blackstar)''

Reedus did say that we will be him. This is very obvious because we as players will be playing Sam. But I wonder why it is so special in the way he said that quote. And from these lyrics, I think we could very well have a moment where a player can take over the progress of where another person has died to continue the legacy (hence the 'bravely crying')

I know it's pure speculation, but food for thought seeing that Bowie had a huge impact on Kojima's life. I can totally see that he would've taken inspiration of the album as it was his last one.

Let me know what you think!
