So we know that the team Norman Reedus (Sam) is on is a corpse disposal team. The corpse they were meant to dispose of was the one with the golden face. But their truck crashes for whatever reason and they're left stranded. So the corpse sinks into the ground. After it sinks, we see one of the black things appear over it and begin to chase Sam. I believe this means that when people die, they turn into those black beings. Which is corpse disposal is needed and why the guy would rather die than be captured by them.
