The protagonist’s name is Sam Porter-Bridges. We know from E3 that Sam is a porter, a mailman. Bridges is the name of the organization, as we know through the badges. My first theory is that Death Stranding is set in a period where humans are “slaves”: their surnames are are the names of organisation they work for and their second name is their occupation. This could be a reference to Konami’s ill treatment of their employees.
My second theory revolves around the storyline. In the first, second and third trailers, the baby is considered to be something of great importance. In the TGA 2017 trailer, we see Norman Reedus unaffected by the reverse gravitation when he holds the baby.
In 2001, the Monolith, planted by aliens, successfully evolves David Bowman into an advanced form of human evolution - Starchild. After watching the movie, I realised this: What if the baby IS THE STARCHILD?A genetically created human being, impervious to the powers of the aliens, which explains why Norman Reedus was unaffected by holding the baby.
In the del Toro trailer, we see him holding the baby, and a broken baby doll floats past him. This baby is pulled in by Mads, who on realising that that was the wrong baby, orders his soldiers to attack del Toro.
Here’s the theory:
del Toro is a scientist, one of the group which created the baby( superhuman and impervious to the aliens), and he wants to get the baby safe to a lab, where the baby can survive and grow without the incubator. This is where Norman Reedus comes in. Sam (Norman), a mailman, with a history of successful deliveries, is given the task of delivering the baby to a place. As this is a matter concerning human existence, (Sam doesn’t know about this, which is why in the E3 trailer, he says that all he ever did “was just making deliveries), Sam is escorted by two of his colleagues and is provided with protective equipment, such as the wheel thing on his shoulder, which detects aliens. The TGA 2017 trailer, in my idea, is the first encounter of the aliens and Sam.
In the E3 2018 trailer, we see him taking a shower, in a pensive mood, with the cuffs on and naked. I think the first trailer is just a figment of his fear and imagination. The locale, with the beached sea animals and apparent oil spill, is of some considerable melancholic importance to Sam, is the setting for his nightmare. We see him crying, holding the baby, WITHOUT THE INCUBATOR- meaning the baby can not survive without the incubator. He has grown so emotional and anxious with this mission. Immediately, we see that the baby disappears, implying that at some point, Sam loses the baby or the baby is “converted” to an alien. The games is about all this.
The scars on Sam’s belly probably indicate that since the Baby was crucial to human existence, he was put inside Sam’s belly, at a point in the storyline where the incubator breaks.
Thank you for reading and please give your suggestions.
