In 1945, Nazi Germany utilized an array of superweapons known as Die Glocke to win World War 2. Die Glocke was a unique kind of weapon: it would age its victims to death, transforming every living thing in its path into a black carbon sludge or causing its blood to gel and solidify, killing it. The commanders of the Reich survived in a hidden doomsday bunker somewhere, where they would wait out the coming dark days until they could return to the world to rule it as their own.
Many years have past. The survivors in the black sludge-drenched wasteland that once was America have founded the United Cities of America to fight back against the Reich. There is one small problem: the after effects of the device have induced a sterility epidemic. The top scientists of the UCA, led by Agent Bridges (played by Guillermo Del Toro), work on a way to circumvent this using artificially-grown children in mechanical wombs. The problems don't end there, however, as these new children cannot live in the harsh climate since oxygen levels have declined with the absence of plant life. To help the resistance effort, Bridges and his team build a cyborg (played by Norman Reedus) (or maybe a group of cyborgs) equipped with an internal, Glocke-like device which allows him to bend time and jump through it at will. His mission: rewrite history, and make the world safe for the children. Unfortunately, a traitor in the UCA (perhaps even Bridges himself) reveals the secret of the cyborg technology to the Reich, and they build their own cyborg (played by Mads Mikkelsen) to hunt Reedusbot across time and space, equipped with a better version of the time bending device. Additionally, the Reich works on a new technology called "Strands" which are a way to reanimate and control dead things, such as fallen 101st airborne soldiers and destroyed tanks (which have been rebuilt with dead flesh from the countless whales and dolphins killed by Die Glocke). With his army of the undead and powerful time bender, Madsbot sets out to destroy Reedusbot, but Reedusbot always manages to stay one step ahead of him...and Reedusbot wants his Nazi scalps.
