This is solely my personal opinion mixed with some strong ideas from other Reddit users Youtuber Ragnarox and etc... all combined to form this concept of the story dynamics in this mysterious game...
What if the name itself we are thinking about in the wrong way instead of it's double meaning...
Death stranding... Not just as in Whales and other sea creatures beaching themselves to die... not just as in being abandoned or left alone to die. (All of the trailer imagery feature excellent parallels to a literal death stranding as a form of misleading the eye/mind) but what if the title is actually suggesting being CONNECTED to death itself... Death STRANDING... or Death ROPE... Death CONNECTION...I'll explain.
First I'd like to have you all think of the first trailer that was presented... everything had black thick ropes or "strandings" seeming to appear attatched to it. At least... everything that was already dead...
Think about it... And watch the trailer again... there's a lot of purposeful misleading going on. When we first see Reedus lying next to the baby in sands... we see a black strand coming from literally the baby's belly button connecting to what we think is Norman Reedus character. He sits up and that begins to embrace the baby while crying and wheeping. Not just out of surprise. But then when he stands up the camera PURPOSELY shows us he has NO belly button and the strand to the baby disappears. Well why would we the audience be show that he has no belly button if not to induce into our minds he is DISCONNECTED from everything else that has a black strand coming from it. And mind you everything that's so far in that trailer that has a strand is dead... OR... possibly about to die??? Maybe that's why he wept for the baby... he noticed the strand and knew what that meant...
Now I'll try to take it further utilizing the second trailer...
Think about this...
We see strands coming from dead crabs and so on and so forth... Del Toros character in the beginning of the trailer... HAS NO BLACK STRAND...
Now... he does have some sort of connector or umbilical cord which he connects to the baby's pod for whatever reason... but, it's not a black strand.
Now pay even closer attention to the army we see marching on the bridge...
They all have black strands... even the tank... and they're all dead... and if you count the planes flying in the sky coming from the same era as the tanks and soldiers... those planes have strands too... because the pilots and the planes themselves are already dead... like the soldiers... Now look on the tank. If you watch the interview where Kojima is showing a demonstration of the new engine he plans to use for the game, you'll see a quick rendering of the tank in an office room like area... just for show... look closer at the rendering... the tank is extremely rusted... and covered in Squids and Tentacles. As if it were pulled from the deep oceans years after WWII...
So we have another connection there... these strands... are connecting to things tha are dead... can bring the dead to life... and have particularly use the waters of that game world to do its bidding... hence the Dead Sea creatures, black smelly waters, strands connected to only dead things of the ocean...
Now the army we saw was actually a small unit... maybe a specific group of soldiers or a unit that lost their lives in a major battle in a specific section off a coast "cough" Normandy "cough". Which are being utilized for the purpose of warfare again.
Now it brings me to Mads Mikkelsons character...
He's literally connected to multiple soldiers at one time with those deadly black strands... we literally see him control everything from the soldiers, the strands, everything.... Maybe he's the literal and sole casie for all the death and carnage we see in the trailers.
Norman Reedus character, no belly button.. no strands
Del Toro... a tube like umbellical cord... no strands
Mad mikkeleson 4 strands he's using at will and potentially all the strands
Maybe... and what if...
EVERY STRAND CONNECTS TO HIM... what if he is the embodiment of death without actually being death. Maybe his game character has broken the fourth wall by finding a way to control all game aspects and derives his power from the death of everything else in the game.
Now I've read theories stating that mikelsons character my actually be aware that he's in a game and is utilizing this knowledge and manipulating things to get to the real world... maybe idk...
What I do know is he's connecting to everything dead... including the black waters that show up in the second trailer. Now another thing is like to point out as a possibility is that what if the second trailer setting isn't actually an old setting... what if it's in a modern but rural place... cough"Normandy cough... but is being re invaded by these deathly characters being controlled by Mads Mikkeleson... what if Mads is using the already dead somehow of the game world to take over that game world...
