Can one go far as to argue that Death Stranding is a spiritual successor to Silent Hill and Metal Gear?-UNR

Obviously Kojima directed Metal Gear, and would’ve directed Silent Hills as well (we can count PT as a Silent Hill game right?). Given all the Konami controversy way back when, when Kojima left the company and started his own to begin development on Death Stranding - would it be too far to assume that he used ideas which he couldn’t use previously? And would it be more of a stretch to suggest that DS is a sequel to the two in everything but name? Of course I don’t mean in the literal sense, but tone-wise and possibly with some assets/concepts from the games thrown in there?

For MGS - I understand that Kojima wanted to stop making those games way back when MGS2 came out - but whilst playing DS it always feels as if the tone is almost consistently aligned with MGS (some might disagree). This is obviously going to be the case anyway as it’s a Kojima project, and I’m aware that the two are completely different games. But some parts of it just feel really similar - I.e. the codec conversations, having a team of people people speak to you about specific topics, or literally some of the gameplay feeling similar to MGSV (I mean mainly the format of acquiring missions/selecting loadouts etc). Even some boss fights give me an MGS vibe, and other random things such as the buddy bot etc.

For Silent Hill, obviously Kojima has re-collaborated with Norman Reedus and has even brought in Guillermo Del Toro and Junji Ito for mocap, but something which has always got me thinking of the parallels between DS and SS is the idea of the BTs. These are Beached Things, beings on a different plane of existence, or simply just ghosts. The idea of different parallel worlds is commonly used in SH (one standard foggy world and a rusty, grimey hell hole world), and in DS BTs are linked between the world of the dead and the real world in game. Also, the idea of detecting BTs with both the BB and the Odradek spinning in their direction just reminded me a lot of using the radio in SH to detect monsters in the fog. In both cases you can’t clearly see these enemies, so you’re using tools to aid you to detect things in the unknown. Additionally from how PT was in general - not to say that it would’ve reflected the final product, but Kojima decided to use a ghost in his own take on SH - maybe BTs were a further development on some SH assets/concepts - they are quite creepy so it could be the case!

This is probably just me looking into things too deeply and seeing what I want to see - but I feel like in some ways Kojima wasn’t done with either franchise - but obviously due not owning either of the IPs he couldn’t really do much without having to make a new game from scratch.

Feel free to disagree or come at me with “no shit, it’s a Kojima game” - this isn’t to say that DS isn’t it’s own thing, because it really is, there isn’t anything like it (besides what I’ve just written about). I just wanted to put my thoughts down and see if they made sense to anyone or if I’m talking complete BS 😂
