First time player, early impressions/thoughts, any suggestions or tips for someone new?-UNR

Hey everyone! Just for the record I've never received any spoilers for the story or game, and my experience has been pretty blind 🙏🏽 Also aware/mindful not to look at the rest of this subreddit (only looking at this post).

Playing the directors cut on PS5, I've been a fan of the song death stranding by CHVRCHES for years and always knew it was from this game, but I never got a chance to play it until now. The soundtrack and chill vibe of the world has been nice, but I still haven't heard CHVRCHES yet.

I’m still about two hours into the game in chapter 2, I last left off on Guillermo del Toro telling me I need to pee on the ghosts to stop them? So far from my understanding of the plot, Norman Reedus is tasked with the goal of connecting the entire country and giving them Internet to stay connected. And also his mom was the president who died and her sister is being held captive by Californians, hence why I have to travel across the country to not only connect the world but save her as well. All of this while alien ghost monsters called the Death Stranding are eating everyone and blowing up the planet.

I know people for years made fun of this game saying it’s a walking simulator, but I haven’t gotten that vibe at all. I like the concept of the game and how you need to balance carrying cargo across various mountains while dodging the ghost monsters and the Mule gang, my friend told me that the world becomes a lot more open in chapter 3 and to power through chapter 2 as it’s not the strongest first impression. This game is more than just being a delivery driver for people, you’re the connector of stories for everyone to link together in humanity.

I have learned very quickly there's not that much room for fall damage and physics are pretty realistic. In my first day of playing I tried a 0 death run, thought I could jump a small ledge and ended up falling down an entire mountain. ever since then I overpack and carry multiple ladders with me.

I'm a fairly simple gamer (I've played plenty of rpgs but over the last few years I've become shooter-brained, my favorite game is Apex so I'm accustomed to the only important buttons being aim, shoot, jump and Use Ability), but this game's system is so intricate I very quickly got overwhelmed lol.

Like every 30 minutes there's a brand new aspect or game element that I need to remember / pay attention to, and I find myself having to read pages on pages of text in game in the menus, missions, and shops just so I feel like I'm staying caught up.

I don't have a problem with it, though. It has a similar vibe for me for when I watched the first Dune movie a few years ago; I was confused like 65-70% of the movie watching it, but I understood that it's all world building that will eventually pay off in a grand way. I feel the same thing is happening with DS1 (and I'd only assume DS2 continues to reward everything that DS1 set up).

The control scheme is pretty complicated so far, but I don’t have a problem with it. Given how much depth there is to the wide arsenal and tools you have, as well as the different forms of movement you need while having to monitor not only your health level but the baby's as well, with having to build stuff as well, ALL of this while carrying a bunch of boxes on your back and being mindful of the physics behind how you stack everything, the scary part is I’m sure I haven’t even scratched the surface yet but already in chapter 2, there's so much keep tabs on lol.

Like I mentioned before too, I mainly play Apex and shooter games, so my general game knowledge and muscle memory for those can very easily translate across games. Not so much here, which is refreshing because I’m being forced out of my comfort zone😅

I still have no idea how the babies work, but I’ve already got the early vibe that Norman will try to save the baby from getting disposed since apparently they stop getting used after a year. From what I understand, they essentially give you wallhacks to see the ghosts. So what's the point of Norman's "DOOM" that lets him "sense" ghosts? Is that not the same thing

The story so far doesn’t make too much sense to me, but I’m sure it’ll get more unraveled as I carry on, if anyone has any tips or questions for a brand new player that knows nothing about the death stranding universe, I'm here to learn but also being mindful and not to spoil myself with anything, as apparently the world gets a lot more rich. Thank you!
