It has long been speculated that Lisa Garland was already dead when Harry encounters her, and she is simply a ‘ghost’ of Silent Hill. So her real cause of death is up for debate, perhaps she was murdered by her husband in the same sense that Lisa from PT was.
I find it hard to believe that Kojima, being as clever and cryptic as he is, would name a character Lisa in Silent Hills knowing that a character in the first entry of Silent Hill shares the same name and that they are both potential entities that ‘haunt’ the protagonist.
Perhaps Norman Reedus’ character was supposed to be Harry Mason.
I imagine this would be what made it a soft reboot, i.e. including the same characters with comparable plot lines, except with enough differences to modernise the franchise and allow it to be an appropriate title for those who have never played the games before.
This is essentially what capcom did with the Resident Evil 2/3 remakes. Same characters, with different voice actors and appearances, with comparable but not identical plot lines.
It’s not a stretch to assume this, since Konami already did this before with Shattered Memories. That was a reimagining of Silent Hill 1 and it is perhaps the most beloved of all the western Silent Hill games... would make sense for Silent Hills to be something similar.
