So I've got a theory about the games primary motivations, based on several elements and aspects within the recently released trailer:
This form of life (whether it is related to ours in some way is unclear) is more literally connected from life to death than our own, where our umbilical cords are severed whereas theirs are more permanent, perhaps being an essential internal part of them to help them connect/relate, or be controlled etc.
Guillermo is a 'radical' in their society who thinks life shouldn't be tied together in this way, and that the more ideal version of their life forms is ones that are disconnected from this broad network of life (to avoid control/obtain freedom is unclear). The 'connected' ones (or their leaders) view this as unnatural and as an unsafe way to tamper with nature (or to prevent something from existing outside their web of control/influence, etc.)
From there, Norman Reedus is a sort of 'Adam' born outside their network of influence because of his 'unnattural' birth, and perhaps even starting his own unique network of living things (that would be something 'we've never seen in a video game' lol, making your own entire species timeline, or some shit). How the 'alien'-type figures fit in (if they aren't just the people hunting him) is anyone's guess. Perhaps they created the initial 'network-beings' and wish to oversee this new start in evolution or 'founder species' (it's a real thing in evolution, look it up). Who knows at this point, but what a great trailer lol.

It would explain Guillermo's sneaky demeanor, the soldier's hunting/searching demeanor, and the cables connected to all of the animals on the beach/elsewhere
