It isn't really a mystery as to why the numbers would drop.
Anyone who read the comics KNEW Glenn was going to die, but aside from that watching the show really makes you love that character, even though part of the reason why you love him is knowing hes going to die and leave Maggie behind. You love him BECAUSE you know he's going to die.
With Abraham it just sucks because after you see his story arc you realize how much of a good guy he is, you sympathize with him and you grow to respect him for doing what he does, and you grow to love him as well.
Norman Reedus was loved so much because of who he was before being introduced to TWD, he had a cult following already but the life he breathed into Daryl was amazing, he was a character you already were interested in and the way they had him develop, again, made you absolutely love him.
So with that the math is pretty obvious. Glenn and Abraham are dead, brutally I might add. And Daryl has been stuck in a cell and barely seen this season. In my opinion the only other character that you WANT to see is Rick, Maggie and Jesus. Obviously we want to see Negan because, he's F'n Negan. But you killed off 2 majorly loved characters and then put the 3rd on a back burner, and obviously there is going to be some huge comeback for him because he is who is but still. I could have lived better not seeing Heath( who I don't like or care about in any way) and Tara develop or even introduce the Oceanside camp. That time would have been better spent focusing on Daryl/Negan or how Rick is going to handle it. I'd bet that after the Glenn/Abraham murders, the next highest watch episode(s) of the season had to do with Daryl and then the numbers really dropped.
Also the split episodes with stuff you don't really care about kinda just started putting the nail into the coffin. Hopefully they see the feedback and switch up this style they have.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on the matter, I doubt you'll read it but if you do what are your thoughts?
