As we end the year of 2024, allow me to end it with a full review of Helluva Boss!
First off:
- Murder Family!
Albeit the weakest episode imo. I liked it, but to be fair it’s the first episode of Season One aside from the pilot. Blitzo gets to deal with Mayberry, a kindergarten teacher who died of a murder-suicide because her husband cheated on her with another woman, but turns out that the woman, whom we later get to know her as Martha, somehow survived and got compensation money. Obviously the earlier episodes were heavily focused on the dark comedy side of things and we get to see IMP do what they do best: Kill people who deserve it.
And we also get our first glimpse at hearing Millie’s new voice actress. At first, most of us didn’t seem to like it at first, but then it later grew on us. And we also get to hear Stolas’ new voice actor which sounds more sophisticated and refined while Millie’s more southern and rough. I don’t really got anything else to say so..I’ll give this episode a 4.5/10
Next up: Everyone’s favorite episode, Loo Loo Land!!
In this episode, we get introduced to two new characters and a our look into a redesign of Stella that’ll stay concurrent throughout the series. First, we meet a young Octavia who had a nightmare about her father, Stolas going missing and Stolas comforting her by singing her a lullaby that’s a fantastical musical number “You Will Be Okay” (it’s fucking awesome). In this song, Stolas tells her that even if he’s gone or if something bad happens, he will always be with her in spirit and reassure her that she’ll be alright. (Now that I think about it, this can be seen as foreshadowing)
Fast foward to the present day, we see an older Octavia hearing a woman yelling in the distance, only to soon find out that it’s Stella yelling at Stolas for cheating on her with an imp. Once she leaves, Stolas decides to take Octavia to Loo Loo Land, and decides to bring Blitzo and the IMP crew as bodyguards so they don’t get kidnapped and killed. This is where we later get introduced to another character and an antagonist named Fizzarolli, and we get more lore that this is a ripoff carnival of Lucifer’s carnival named Lu Lu World, and we get hints of the Sin of Greed, Mammon. Overall, a 7/10.
Third Episode: Spring Broken
Where we get introduced to everyone’s favorite seductive succubus pop star, Verosika Mayday, and her fellow bodyguard named Vortex, a Hellhound that can transform into a human, same with Verosika. We soon find out that she was Blitzo’s girlfriend at one point and he seemed pretty embarrassed about it. It was a pretty funny episode considering that this entire episode is basically about Blitzo fighting over a fucking parking space. Overall 6.5/10
Episode Four: Cherub!
Another weak episode imo, but it does give us some insight into how Heaven operates. The Cherubs in the Angel Hierarchy are the second-highest below the Seraphims. Meaning that the Cherubs are directly below beings like Sera and Emily. We get to meet three new characters: Loopty, his nemesis/sidekick, and Wally Wackford. Loopty’s sidekick is pretty much he’s your typical slapstick villains who don’t care about the poor (think of Doctor Eggman) and Loopty wants him dead, but then it turns out that Loopty wanted him dead so he can reunite with him in Hell. A 5.5/10 for me.
Now we get into Episode 5: The Harvest Moon Festival!
We get introduced to the Wrath Ring, where every single year, they celebrate a special event known as the Harvest Moon Festival. The festival seems like a mixture of Thanksgiving and Halloween. And we get introduced to everyone’s favorite villain: Striker! Who was voiced by none other than Norman Reedus at the time!
This episode was moreso a Moxxie-focused episode as Striker tries to impress everyone, including Blitzo to the point where he offers him to join IMP, which frustrates Moxxie because he feels like he’s being replaced. Only to find out that Striker is a bounty hunter and uses a special angelic weapon similar to Vaggie (which we now know that he bought it from Carmilla) that is used to kill demon royalty. He overpowers both Moxxie and Millie and gets prepared to shoot Stolas, but Blitzo intervenes before having an infamous interesting talk about how Blitzo could use his independence to fight against the higher ups, which pretty much also reveals that Striker is like Blitzo. Afterwards, we find out that Striker was actually working for none other than Stella. Overall, a 9.5/10.
Now onto Truth Seekers, by far the most interesting episode where we delve deep into Blitzo’s and Moxxie’s history. In this episode, we learn that Blitzo has a case of an inferiority complex, especially considering Imps are at the bottom of the barrel aside from Hellhounds, and Blitzo views Stolas as a deity who is untouchable. Which made some people wonder that this is probably why Blitzo always stalks Moxxie and Millie. Because they are the ideal relationship that Blitzo wants, but he is also scared because of what people will think of him and is afraid of getting too close to them (we’ll get to that later). And for Moxxie, we get insight that he’s afraid of rejection, so he’s willing to do anything to win Millie over.
A 10/10 for me
Now we get to the finale of Season 1: Ozzie’s!
Oh boy, this episode. Where we FINALLY get introduced to the REAL Fizzarolli as well as a brand new sin: The sin of Lust, Asmodeus!
Moxxie plans to bring Millie on a date for their anniversary and Blitzo wants to come, mostly because he doesn’t want to feel left out and lonely, so he decides to bring Stolas along. And this..is where things get messy. Once inside, Stolas asks Blitzo why after all this time he decided to finally bring Stolas out on a date, only to be interrupted by a familiar voice: Fizzarolli. Only this time, it’s not a robotic replica. It’s the real deal.
After a good few minutes, we get introduced to the big man himself: Asmodeus. And we also get reintroduced to a few other characters in the past episodes such as Verosika and Wally after Blitzo accidentally exposes himself because he was willing to defend Moxxie. They both get shunned out and their relationship exposed. Which embarrasses the hell out of Blitzo, and was pretty much the one thing that he feared the most: Blitzo being seen as a different person. And it was also revealed that Asmodeus and Fizzarolli are also in a relationship!
Now onto Season 2.
I’ll just summarize my thoughts on Season 2 from here on out because I don’t want this to be a big ass long post lmao.
I…liked Season 2. A lot. Especially after Sinsmas and Mastermind. Although people have some valid complaints and reasons why they don’t like certain plot points and characters, Let me just preface this by saying: This isn’t a story about other characters such as Stella or Verosika. No. This is a series about Blitzo, an independent Imp who is willing to fight against the corrupt classist, racist system of Hell and how Stolas also wants to relate to Blitzo. Because throughout Season 2, we’re shown that in the episode of Apology Tour and Full Moon, Stolas wants to live the life of a normal denizen in Hell without a care of using his status as an excuse. Which is ironically what Stolas got in Mastermind. Now Stolas is able to walk amongst the Imps for 100 years.
Which is the start of Stolas’ life crumbling down as when we get to Sinsmas, that’s exactly what happens as..we get to see into Octavia’s life; Octavia feels like she was being lied to this entire time and felt utterly betrayed by her father because she promised him to never leave her. And this was all the way back in Episode 2 of Season 1. And Octavia tried to forgive her dad time and time again, but Stolas kept making the same mistake, which in her eyes now, means that Stolas, her own father, never truly cared about her.
Octavia doesn’t like how her mother acts and neither her uncle. All she wants is just a normal family, which is what Stolas admitted to Stella back in Ozzie’s. It was clear that at the start of Season 2, neither Stolas or Stella liked each other and the only person who he cared about was Blitzo, so his father, Paimon decided to buy Blitzo. Stolas obviously cares about both his daughter and Blitzo, but it’s a matter of who he cares about the most. Because in Octavia’s eyes, her dad cares more about Blitzo than herself or her mother.
Stolas needs to choose one or the other. But knowing how this story might go: I think Stolas might end up with Blitzo because in Mastermind, he was WILLING to give up his life, status, and power to be with Stolas. And now Stolas regrets it.
I might get flamed for saying this but:…Stolas deserved it. He’s willing to risk his own life to save what is considered in the eyes of a Goetia and a Sin, a slave. Stella may be rude and bitchy, but after learning about all of this: Both Stella and Andrealphus thinks that Stolas is not worthy of being a Goetia. And I think they’re right. Mainly because all Stolas cares about is his daughter and Blitzo.
Overall, I LOVE this series and I can’t wait to see what Season 3 and 4 has in store! Especially Stella’s backstory.
And Happy Early New Year’s!
