So, I’m making this post after seeing another post regarding this topic, and the ridiculous hatred coming from the fandom due to it. I want to start of by saying that people do ned to CHILL OUT. It’s okay to discuss these things, it’s ok to be either happy or upset by them, but spewing hate at the writers and actors over fictional characters is never the right response. Now that that’s out of the way, let me talk about why i have a problem with these leaks. SPOILERS AHEAD STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW. .

So, any big TWD fan is aware of the fact that Daryl, a fan favorite character, has never been in a romantic relationship. He’s never even shown definitive romantic feelings for any character, although people love to ship him with literally everyone that he shares a few scenes with and shows a mild fondness for. As of the last 2 seasons, the two most popular ships have been between him and Carol (this is one that’s been around since the show began), and him and Connie (a new character from season 9).
As hard as it may be for the fandom to admit, the writers are not obligated to put Daryl in a romantic relationship with EITHER of these women. He could be with someone else, or no one at all. The issue is that Daryl is a very tricky case. He isn’t like Rick or Carol, both of whom have had flings with other characters. Rick with Jessie, and Carol with Tobin and Ezekiel (i know she was married to Ezekiel, but i think it’s quite clear that while she had feelings for him, she was never truly in love with him). For both of them, it’s obvious that sex/romance is possible without being truly in love with a person. Daryl is not like this. Anyone who has been paying attention to his character for 10 seasons can see this, and it is something that has been pretty much outright confirmed by Norman Reedus and others working on the show. When Daryl finds someone who is the one, that person will truly be THE ONE.
That brings me to the 10x18 spoilers, which claim that Daryl entered a romantic relationship with some random chick named Leah during the time skip (while he was off looking for Rick’s body). This, my friends, is Daryl’s THE ONE, i suppose. He apparently was so in love with this woman, that when she asked him to choose between her and the rest of his people/his quest to find Rick’s body, he claims that he “belongs with her.” Forsaking Carol, Michonne, Rick’s children, and everyone else he has grown to have a bond with at the communities.
Now, I’ve been a Daryl and Carol shipper since the beginning of the show, and so obviously i would prefer for them to end up together. However, i cannot possibly express in words how much i would have preferred him and Connie to get together to what we’re now getting. With Connie, there’s a strong bond between them that we’ve gotten to see grow, and that we’re invested in. This girl is so random and out of the blue that it feels like i safely crossed the street at the crosswalk only to get barreled over by a horse. There’s no development and no emotional investment on the part of the viewer. It feels out of character for somebody that we’ve been watching onscreen for almost 10 years.
I dont know what the purpose of this was. I dont know if the writers were sick of people arguing over whether he should be with Carol or Connie and so they basically were like “here is random girl that he loves and lost and so he will never love again.” I dont know if this will be used as a foundation for something further down the line. I just dont know.
