Note: I'm new to this sub, so I apologize if this kind of stuff gets posted all the time.
So do start, I believe that Norman Reddus and Mads' characters have some sort of relationship in that they know each other. And in the universe of Death Stranding, time travel has been discovered. And I think the person who discovered it was Norman Reedus' character. You can see the chains he has around his neck that have physics equations inscribed into them. So it is possible that Reddus was perhaps a government researcher who discovered how to time travel and began to experiment with it. But as we know from movies and tv shows, the more you mess with time and space, the more screwed up things become.
This is why when Reddus wakes up on the beach, there are a myriad of amphibian species dried up and dead. Reedus did something that altered space and time. Now, where exactly is he in time? I don't know. But I think those figures in the sky might. Though he looks at them with anger, they are probably what you could call the "Guardians". They are meant to protect the boundaries of space and time and ensure that nothing goes out of whack. But what about the baby? Perhaps that is a way of leading him back to his family and where he came from. But in order to do that, he has to go through the Guardians and do as he's supposed to to make things right.
But what about Mags and Benicio Del Toro? Well I think Mads will turn out to be the primary antagonist. And what I theorize is that he got Reedus stuck in some other part of time on purpose to further advance his own sick agenda. But what is it? Well as can be seen in the second trailer, it seems to be either France or Germany of WWII. He is most likely using time to bring with him the technology of his current age and place in time to further the Nazi agenda of world domination. That would explain the more modern looking attire that they wear. And if the soldiers are in fact undead, then he may be bringing back the bodies of dead American soldiers to life to use as his slaves of war, which could be seen as an insult as they would then be helpless to stop the enemy that they spent their lives trying to defeat. Another theory however could be that in altering time in the slightest fashion, Mads was indirectly given some sort of powers that make him appear almost supernatural and able to alter genetic life at will.
As for Benicio, he is most likely trying to set things right like Norman while attempting to avoid Mads for fear of getting caught and failing. His part is probably much bigger than that, but that remains to be seen.
But the overall theme I think that remains is life. Norman and Benicio seem to value it the most whereas Mads looks down on it as being insignificant and beneath him. Given his new abilities, he believes he is above life and death itself and will do anything to further himself and achieve dominion.
Again, this is all purely speculative. I hope the real game is something much more enlightening and I pray another trailer comes out lol.
