From what I've learned from school and such, in the catholic faith, if one has not been judged after death, they are stuck in purgatory; they cannot move on.
My Theory is that the 'Explosion' Mentioned in the trailer has blurred the lines of the afterlife. We have those who live (Norman Reedus), those who have died (Mads, dead soldiers) and those who cannot move on (the hand monsters).
Now get this. According to the religion, unborn babies and animals cannot move on. Dead, but unborn babies are stuck in purgatory.
Maybe the artificial wombs keep the unborn babies from being born, and as such they can communicate between all three worlds. As such the 'palms' work to detect the purgatory based beings.
This would also explain why alot of animals are seen throughout both trailers, living or dead.
