Mads' face loses most of the ferrofluid-type stuff after he grabs the baby. Perhaps he needs to feed on the foetuses(?) to avoid being one of the spooky scary skeletons. Norman may be tryin to stop him, controllin men like the Bridges man. We know only Guillermo's likeness is used, so perhaps its a case of Reedus acting through Del Toro...
